World Triathlon Para Series Yokohama and Para Cup Taranto

Two significant events contribute to the Paralympic ranking, with the top nine athletes securing national slots for Paris 2024.

On May 11th in Japan, in the PTVI class, Vita Oleksiuk, guided by Nataliia Matsupko, secured seventh place. As a result, Vita climbed to the 14th position in the Paralympic ranking, boosting her total points.

On June 8th, Valerii Perekhrest, Anatolii Varfolomieiev, Alisa Kolpakchy, and Vita Oleksiuk earned Olympic points in the Italian city of Taranto.

Valeriy Perekhrest made his international debut in the PTS3 class, clinching victory! He debuted in the ranking at the 19th position.

Alisa Kolpakchy dominated the running stage in the PTS5 class! Competing against French athlete Emilie Gral for the second position, Alisa caught up with her rival during the run. She secured a silver finish and moved up to the seventh position in the Paralympic ranking.

In the PTVI class, Anatoliy Varfolomyev, guided by Roman Korol, finished fifth. Among the women, Vita Oleksiuk, alongside Nataliia Matsupko, took third place! This marked the first podium finish for the Ukrainian duo in this lineup. They showcased excellent performance in swimming and cycling, finishing the race with a four-minute lead over their pursuers. Vita Oleksiuk concludes the event in Italy at the 14th position in the Paralympic ranking.

Ukraine to be Represented at the Paralympics in Paris!

The World Triathlon Para Series in Montreal marked the final event in the Paralympic qualification, closing on July 1. The top nine athletes in the Paralympic ranking secure national slots. Ukrainian Alisa Kolpakchy, despite trailing in the swim, caught up during the cycling stage. She demonstrated the second-fastest run time, finishing third!

In the Paralympic ranking, Kolpakchy rose to sixth place, surpassing Poland’s Marta Dzietzentkowska, who finished sixth in Montreal. Kolpakchy concluded the qualification period with 1453 points, stemming from her fifth place at the World Championships and podium finishes in the Para Series events in Devonport and Montreal. Ukraine will be represented in the women’s PTS5 class at the Paralympics!

In the PTVI class, Vita Oleksiuk and guide Nataliia Matsupko secured seventh place in Montreal, ending the qualification period ranked 17th with 1134 points. Their points came from a tenth-place finish at the World Championships, a fifth place in the Devonport Para Series, and a podium finish at the Para World Cup in Taranto, Italy.

The Paris Paralympic Games will be the third for triathlon. Eleven medal sets will be contested by 120 participants, with nine from each Olympic group and the top five women from the PTS3 class. The remaining 16 slots will be filled by invitations from the IPC and World Triathlon.

Vita Oleksiuk and her guide Nataliia Matsupko in the women’s PTVI category finished fifth place. Ukrainian women to earn valuable points and rank, in a crucial qualification window for Paris 2024.

Ukrainian Para Triathletes join Japanese National team training camp

The Ukrainian Para triathlon team has participated in a joint training camp with the Japanese national team in Okinawa, Japan, from February 25 to March 5. With training difficulties in Ukraine due to current circumstances, the athletes sought a conducive environment in Japan to prepare for upcoming competitions.

Alisa Kolpakchy, a Ukrainian Para triathlete, expressed her gratitude for the warm reception, emphasizing the rarity of such experiences amidst the challenges back home.

Finding stable training conditions in Ukraine has been challenging amid the turmoil. Kolpakchy highlighted the mental and physical hurdles faced, noting the difficulty in finding peace after training and the emotional strain of being away from home during uncertain times.

This collaborative training camp was facilitated by ‘Sport For Tomorrow,’ a program backed by the Japanese government, aiming to promote international cooperation and development through sports. The addition of the Ukrainian team, comprising athletes Alisa Kolpakchy and Vita Oleksiuk, guide Nataliia Matsupko, and coach Roman Korol, had a positive impact on the Japanese team as well.

Japanese Paralympians Hideki Uda and Satoru Yoneoka expressed admiration for the Ukrainian team’s dedication and resilience, acknowledging the inspiration they derived from training alongside them.

During their stay, the Ukrainian athletes engaged with the local community, visiting Motobu Elementary School alongside Japanese Para triathletes. The interaction allowed students to gain insights into para triathlon and appreciate the challenges faced by athletes from diverse backgrounds, fostering cultural exchange and understanding.

The visit left a profound impact on both the students and the athletes, with expressions of gratitude and warmth exchanged despite language barriers.

Looking ahead to upcoming races in Abu Dhabi and Devonport, the Ukrainian Para triathletes remain focused on securing their spots for the Paralympic Games Paris 2024, determined to excel and inspire others through their dedication and resilience.
